Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has undoubtedly revolutionized the way we interact with machine-generated text. This technology, which is based on large language models (LLMs), enables computers to answer questions naturally and provide detailed information. But despite the progress, there are also challenges, such as trust in the accuracy of the answers and the currency of the data. This is where Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) comes into play.
What is R.A.G.?
Retrieval-Augmented Generation, RAG for short, is an innovative artificial intelligence technique that enables generative AI systems to access additional data resources without changing the underlying model. This makes it possible to deliver targeted and more up-to-date information that is more specific to a particular organization or industry. In other words: RAG improves the quality and relevance of the answers from generative AI systems.
Examples with and without R.A.G.
To illustrate the importance of RAG, let's consider an industry, for example. A conventional LLM could answer basic questions about the industry's history, its biggest players, and its particularities. But when it comes to delivering current information such as the latest news or recent developments, the LLM reaches its limits. This is where RAG can step in, by accessing additional data sources and delivering more accurate and more up-to-date answers.
Without a RAG, the LLM would have to be recomputed regularly; with RAG, a model can be fed additional information and benefits from the capabilities of the model itself as well as the additional application-specific information.
Benefits of R.A.G.
The benefits of Retrieval-Augmented Generation are manifold:
Currency: RAG enables access to more up-to-date information than conventional LLMs, since the data can be updated continuously.
Contextualization: The data in RAG's knowledge repository is more specific to an organization or industry, which leads to more relevant answers.
Correctability: By identifying the sources in the vector database, errors can be fixed quickly and incorrect information can be avoided.
Conclusion
Retrieval-Augmented Generation is undoubtedly an exciting development in the field of generative AI. By integrating additional data resources, RAG makes it possible to deliver more accurate, more up-to-date, and more context-aware answers. While the technology is still relatively new and comes with some challenges, it already shows great potential to improve the quality and relevance of AI systems.

With our many years of experience in the field of AI, we naturally also serve the field of generative artificial intelligence and offer, for example, AI assistants that are based on a current LLM and fed with the corresponding additional information specifically for the customer's use cases, so that an AI assistant is strengthened for an area or a topic to deliver a very good end-customer experience.
Trust is still an issue in this area. We know that not everyone wants to immediately “unleash” an AI assistant on their end customers. There are also a number of use cases where an AI assistant helps employees, for example, to find answers faster, thereby ruling out from the outset the risk of the system being misused on the end-customer side.
